Religious and Ethnic Groups Essay Example for Free
Religious and Ethnic Groups Essay According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Orthodox Judaism is a ââ¬Å"the religion of those Jews who adhere most strictly to traditional beliefs and practices. â⬠(Britannica, 2013) Differentiating from Christianity, Orthodox Jews adhere to daily worship, traditional prayers and holidays, and how and when a child goes through adulthood. While in a synagogue, men and women are separated, which is unlike many religions presented in our society. Orthodox Jews are often looked at as very strict and traditional. The dress garments are used to make them stand out from the world around them as well as to preserve the traditions. For women, pants are not permitted; all clothing must cover the chest to the neck and the arms to at least the elbows and fall below the knees. As a sign of modesty, married women hide their hair with a covering that may be a wig over a shorn head (in the most extreme cases), a wig over hair, a scarf, or a hat. â⬠(Worldmark Encyclopedia of Religious Practices, 2006) For this reason, todayââ¬â¢s society seems to have viewed Orthodox Jews as weird, segregated and just different. Our society sees lots of skin and very few modest women. Jewish people have contributed to American culture for their fight for rights equality. In 1965, in the march from Selma to Montgomery Alabama, you found ââ¬Å"Rabbi Abraham Heschel and African American leader Martin Luther King Jr. joining arms and leading a group of hundreds of protestors in the action against discriminatory voting rights policies (Heschel. )â⬠(Brown, 2010) Though Heschel was not an Orthodox Jew, he still fought for the rights of his people, all Jews, as well as the rights that every American deserves, regardless of race or skin color. Even in our society today you will see camaraderie between an African American and a Jew. Because they fought side by side with African Americans for equal rights, Jewish men and women will forever have an impact on our country. Throughout the history of the world, Jews have been discriminated against, and persecuted. Adolf Hitler sought to ââ¬Å"exterminateâ⬠them from our society. Hitler killed around six million Jewish men, women, and children during the Holocaust. He not only discriminated against Jews, but anyone who could be a Jew, just based on their physical appearance. I think that learning more of their culture and religion has helped me better understand their group. I was curious of many things regarding Orthodox Jews and their Hasidic practices. For instance, I was unaware that the Torah is the first five books of the Holy Bible. Knowing that they dress in such traditional and modest clothing to adhere to their traditions is something that all Americanââ¬â¢s should look up to. Having such a devout faith to have no regard for the culture around you and being so devoted to your faith, or any cause, is something that I think is an admirable quality. South American Hispanics differ not only from White Americans, Asians or African Americans, but also, in part, to other Hispanics. Brazil does not speak Spanish as other Hispanic and Latino countries do. Brazilians speak Portuguese. Not all Hispanics from South America speak this language, but Brazilians, in their own right, have their own little corner if Hispania. South Americans also tend to have a harbored feud with other Hispanics. Brazilians do not want to be mistaken for Colombian; Columbian do not want to be mistaken for Chilean; and so on. In America, Hispanics also tend to be clumped together. Since the closest Hispanic country to the American border is Mexico, many Americanââ¬â¢s classify all Hispanic people as Mexican. This also becomes an issue among White Americanââ¬â¢s as well as Hispanics. Again, each group of Hispanics does not like to be classified as another, causing tension when being addressed as such, is most likely unbeknownst to the person who improperly identified the person or group of people. Hispanics have contributed a great deal to America. Through food, music and language, or nation has grown in leaps and bounds with the help of Hispanic people. There are many Mexican, Brazilian, Columbian and Chilean restaurants to be found in major cities across the U. S. A popular dancing style is the Salsa; which is a very sensual Hispanic dance. Americaââ¬â¢s unofficial second language is Spanish. There are many immigrants in the United States that are strictly Spanish speaking individuals. There are even classes called ESL, or English as a Second Language. Many employers often seek employees who are bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish. Hispanics, throughout History, have experienced uch discrimination, prejudice and are subject to stereotypes. Everyone is guilty, as there is no one group of people to be had as guilty or innocent. Even other Hispanics discriminate against each other. For example, Hispanics are often thought of as poorly educated, illegal immigrants with a very large family. Because these stereotypes have been so prevalent in our society, Hispanics are also thought to be a major factor in the unemployment rat e. Many Americans think that all Hispanics are here illegally taking their jobs and working for less money. This image hurts the Hispanic community, just as it would hurt any other racial or ethnic group. To say that they are poorly educated, therefore do not know how to fight to earn more money is stereotyping and just plain rude. I think that because I am of Hispanic descent, specifically Central America, and have experienced some of these discriminatory factors from both White Americans as well as other Hispanics, I understand where Brazilians, Mexicans, and all other Hispanic groups feel. To earn your way into a country and then to be looked down upon is a hard pill to swallow. It can often be difficult to take the high road and ignore the ignorance, but in the end, it is the most rewarding. Conclusion The discrimination experienced by Orthodox Jews as well as Hispanics is very similar. Both groups have fought for equal rights as Americanââ¬â¢s, regardless of race. Both groups receive looks and whispers behind their backs regarding their culture and beliefs. However, they are different in the fact that Orthodox Jews appear to be White Americanââ¬â¢s; whereas Hispanics tend to have a darker skin tone, which makes it easier to infer their ethnicity. I think that Orthodox Jews are more discriminated against because of their religious beliefs, the clothing that they were and their nonmoving stance on their religion. Hispanics are discriminated against, most often, because of their skin color, the way the talk or their country of origin. I believe that discrimination has many faces. There is no one set of rules for discrimination. Too often, society discriminates against what they do not know. People tend to fear the unknown. By shunning and discriminating against a religious group, a race or ethnicity, or a sexual orientation, people show that they are ignorant on the subject. I think that children are the greatest teachers to the negative minded discriminators. Babies are not born to know color or race or hate. They know people; they know love and compassion. I think the world would be better off if we listened to our children tell the tales of their adventures at school with ââ¬Å"the kid who has skin that looks like chocolate,â⬠as my niece once said.

Impact of Conflict on Human Capital Development
Impact of Conflict on Human Capital Development Living Amid Conflict and its Implications to Human Capital Development By Alexander Ken P. Libranza Introduction The adverse effects of the outbreak and recurrence of conflict can be dangerous because of its long-term economic implications that may force a country into a vicious cycle of low human capital development and conflict (Kim et al, 2010). A common stand among recent literature suggests that conflict destroys the process of accumulating physical and human capital, which deteriorates the labor force and in turn affects institutional capacity (Justino, 2011; Nkurunziza, 2008; Serneels et al, 2010). Most researches on civil wars and armed conflict has been focused on the macro-level of analysis, as noted by Stewart Valpy (2001), that largely address the economic and social consequences concentrating on the prevalence of underdevelopment among conflict-affected countries. However, very few researchers talk about the micro-level impacts of conflicts on household and individual. One possible reason is the unavailability of household-level data in conflict-affected countries. Second, even wh en such data are available the reliability of the source and the sample is also being questioned. Although, empirical works are growing, the increasing micro-level researches has been greatly focused on the effects of war to household living standards and direct impacts of combats that involves narratives of individuals in conflict areas. Very limited works has addressed the long term effects of violent conflict on children and child development, most especially on the Philippine context. Drawing on a review of both theoretical and empirical literature, this paper frames the connection between armed conflict and human capital development within a conceptual framework in which the accumulation of nutrition and education and levels of human development are linked. This paper further shows that while armed conflict might be caused by many factors, low levels of human development increase the risks of conflict outbreaks and recurrence. Figure 1: Adopted from Kim Conceià §Ã £o (2010), ââ¬Å"The Economic Crisis, Violent Conflict, and Human Developmentâ⬠Figure 1 shows the conceptual framework of the study. This framework suggests a self-reinforcing cycle from the roots and cause of armed conflict to low human capital development, and vice versa. The decade-long armed conflict in the Philippines is a proof of this loop. Concentrated in rural areas, variations of insecurities and violence has affected communities especially children and women who are forced to suffer physical and psychological trauma as consequences from shooting, combat operations, and rights abuse. While conflict maybe caused by many factors, Risser (2007) traces its roots to the issues of poverty, economic distribution disparities, and scarcity of state social and welfare services. These becomes a problem because it limits access to health care services and basic education which is critical for the accumulation of physical, social, and human capital. The framework further notes that a country experiencing conflict cannot secure long term returns for investments in both physical and human capital, resulting in low investment in health and education which lead to low levels of human development. A country with low levels of human development has a difficulty in improving institutions which lowers productivity and potential growth. As such, lower growth rates heighten the risk of conflict, potentially trapping a country in a self-reinforcing cycle of conflict, low human development, and vice versa (Kim Conceicao, 2010). In the period of 2001-2005, IBON Foundation monitored 1,061 armed confrontations between the government forces and various armed groups and recorded 569 killing of innocent, unarmed civilians ââ¬â 52 of which are minors under 18-years old, 63 women, and 199 who were killed during the crossfire. Over the last decade, millions of children were killed in armed conflicts all over the world (Machel, 1996). While others are exploited as soldiers and exposed to extreme brutality and violence (Camacho, 2003). It is estimated that 45 percent of the direct victims of armed conflict are 15 years old and younger. Moreover, there were 819 incident of human rights violations involving children from 2001 to April 2005. Children suffered effects of sexual violence, harassment and psychological trauma, intimidation, illegal detention, and exposure to hunger and disease. There were 75 cases of children who were orphaned when their parents were killed during the conflict, however this number may be underreported due to the lack of data, limited information, and unreliability of the sources. Exposure to actual combats and being caught in the crossfire of battles has left them physically disabled, emotionally scarred, and psychologically traumatized which are detrimental in accumulating the proper human and social capital to become well-adjusted and productive workers. This research relates to various fields in the literature, in particular for development economics, health and nutrition, and education. I briefly mention below the key areas in the mentioned field of study that motivates this research. First is on the established link between economic conditions and conflict. There has been a great deal of work analyzing the causal effects of conflict and war. Most of these studies extensively focused on establishing a strong link between poverty to armed conflict and violence (Justino, 2006; Justino, 2009; Miguel et al., 2004). Macro-level analysis, as noted by Stewart, F. Valpy F. (2001), has provided an insight on the economic and social consequences of conflict focusing on the prevalence of underdevelopment among conflict-affected countries. However, there has been limited number of studies focusing at the micro-level impacts of conflicts on household and individual. The increasing micro-level data has been greatly focused on the effects of war to household living standards, direct impacts of combats, and very limited on children and child development especially on the Philippine context. Second is the relationship of health to socio-economic characteristics, and its implications to consumption patterns. Serdan (2008) gave an overview of how armed conflict affects food intakes, food availability, and a clear measurement indicators of nutritional outcomes for children. In addition, Straus and Thomas (2008) noted how health and nutrition affects the accumulation of human capital, as well as its positive effects to productivity and living standards. Third is relating nutrition to academic performance. In fact, academic performance and nutrition, as important elements in the accumulation of proper human and social capital, has been the subject of the growing literature demonstrating the long term impacts of conflict to the productivity of the workforce, their well-being, as well as living standards (Thomas, 2007; Berhman et al., 2004; Malluccio et al., 2006, Serdan, 2008). Furthermore, a unanimous agreement establishes health as an important factor for determining the well-being of the population which affects schooling, income, and labor force participation (Serdan, 2008; Alderman et al., 2006; Shemyakina, 2006; Swee 2009). In all, existing researches are clear: the effects or armed conflict and violence represent a significant challenge to the health and education systems. This further qualifies both the short-term and long-term economic implications of armed conflict to the different sectors of the economy. This paper examines the possible causal effects of armed conflict and violence on health outcomes and education of children. In particular, I analyzed if the exposure to armed conflict and violence has a differential effect on the nutrition and academic performance of conflict-affected children, and comparing these results to those children from non-armed conflict areas. When it comes to peace development, this quantitative research will contribute to the lack of data around conflict-affected areas towards creating an impact assessment for conflict and post-conflict rehabilitation programs. The main issue is the gap between academic studies and practitioner works that has been due to the limited information and reliance on sources of data from mass media and humanitarian monitoring mechanism. I want to establish a closer link between academic studies and policy making in conflict-affected areas. The paper seek to assess how armed conflict and violence affect the health and education of children living in conflict areas. More specifically, this research looks into the anthropometric indicators that would suggest disruptions on the nutritional intakes, academic performance, and schooling of children. In doing so, the study evaluates the current status of health and education of children living amid conflict and violence, and compares the nutritional outcomes and academic performance of children from armed conflict areas to non-armed conflict areas. Fundamentals of Gangs Essay -- Gangs Gang Drugs Crime Essays
Fundamentals of Gangs Street gangs are an organization of young people that are usually in their teens and twenties. They join together and claim a territory or neighborhood as their own. They are known for being violent and heavily involved in drug peddling. On the streets graffiti is the means of communication of territorial limits and to challenge other gangs. A challenge can be anything from making a mark on enemy territory or crossing out enemy tag. There are generally 4 types of individuals associated with street gangs. The ââ¬Å"hard-coresâ⬠are the members who talk, act, dress, and commit criminal acts as a gang member. The ââ¬Å"Associatesâ⬠will identify themselves with gang members in there neighborhood, but rarly get involved. the ââ¬Å"Peripheralsâ⬠are those who identify with gangs for protection or for favors. These are mostly women . They are used to carry drugs or guns for members in return for money or drugs. Than there are the ââ¬Å"gonna-beââ¬â¢sâ⬠they are people who arenââ¬â¢t gang members but wear gang clothes and act like gang members. They are sometimes more dangerous than normal members. They are the recruitment pool for new members. The gang warfare of the 1980ââ¬â¢s into today, is just as dangerous to join as to be a member. To join one of these gangs one must do all sorts of crazy things to ââ¬Å"prove your loyalty to the gang.â⬠Which could be anything from committing a crime to playing Russian roulette. Crip members initiate into the gang by committing a crime in front of gang witnesses. The initiation process is called ââ¬Å"Loc'ingâ⬠-In. Female members have the option to commit a crime or become Sexed-In (Sex with several older members). The most common form of initiation into other gangs is something that they call ââ¬Å"walking the line.â⬠The ââ¬Å"prospectâ⬠is instructed to walk between two lines of gang members, with his/her hands behind them, while members beat and kick them. The prospect must repeat this process until they get from one end of the line to the other without falling down. Along with the initiation routines is the memorization of alliance and set history, organization and mythical symbolism that the gangs refer to as ââ¬Å"knowledge.â⬠Some of this knowledge was the explosion of Street Gangs in the Los Angeles area during the mid to late twentieth century. There were three main periods where gangs in Los Angeles grew at a rapid rate. The first of which was... ...nforcement to track and identity. Presently there are about 200 known Crip gangs in Los Angeles and 70 Blood gangs. Both the Crips and the Bloods developed their own distinctive style that would let anyone recognize them at a sight glance. Just by looking at the color of their clothes, or their tattoos they can be easily distinguished. The Crips started using the color blue for their clothing to set them apart from other gangs. Also the Crips began referring to each other as ââ¬Å"Cuzz,â⬠short for cousin. While the bloods wore red, and referred to each other as ââ¬Å"bloods.â⬠A select group of bloods get a tattoo of two burned dots over a single burned dot. This represents a dogââ¬â¢s paw, so they refer to each other as ââ¬Å"dogââ¬â¢s.â⬠A lot of times members of the Crips dislike using words that start with ââ¬Å"Bâ⬠and bloods dislike using words that start with ââ¬Å"C.â⬠So to a blood a word like cigarette would bigarette. à à à à à These gangs have a long and complex history that came together in the 1980ââ¬â¢s to have many riots and gang wars. Many people were killed it was horrible. There history has been filled with a lot of violence. And now what started as a group of people has turned into a way of life.

Essay --
A prophet was a person viewed upon as an inspired teacher or proclaimer of the will of God. Prophets bring the word of God to the people of God and calls the people to respond. They were called by God in times of crisis, and were chosen by God to lead His people and protect them. "I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I command Him. And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him(Deuteronomy 18:18-19)." When it was difficult to see the hand of God, Prophets would give direction, so that God's people know what was happening, and what they should do. Prophets were the ââ¬Å"fortune tellersâ⬠who have insight into God's purposes for many things. The prophet speaks to the present, considering the future that God has revealed to him. They also received new identities when God calls on them to act in His name. Prophets hav e done many things, no two prophets were called to do the same thing andà every prophet has had a contribution in carrying out the teachings of God. The prophet, Amos, spread the Word of God in such a way that inspired sinners to find redemption. The life that Amos lived, influenced the type of prophet that he became. Amos translates ââ¬Å"to carry the burden,â⬠and the burden that he carried were the sins of the Israelites at the time. Their sins had an impact on his life. Amos lived during ââ¬Å"the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake(ESV. Amos, Intro),â⬠and worked as a shepherd in the town of Tekoa in Judah, suggesting that he was from the lower ranks of society, ââ¬Å"I was neither a prop... ...;à à your assemblies are a stench to me (Amos 5.21).â⬠During Amosââ¬â¢ time, the people allowed lust, pride and greed to take control and become the main focus of their lives. God turns to Amos and wants him to explain to the people of Israel the consequences of their behaviour. The Lord explains, ââ¬Å" ââ¬ËFor three sins of Israel,à even for four, I will not relent. They sell the innocent for silver,à and the needy for a pair of sandalsââ¬â¢(Amos 2.6).â⬠Amos is unapologetic when he expresses the wrongdoings of civilization forcefully, and the changes that people must make in their lives. The people fail to listen to Amos which leads to the destruction of Israel. When Israel is consumed by destruction, it is explained as, ââ¬Å"Will not the day of the Lord be darkness, not lightââ¬âpitch-dark, without a ray of brightness?(Amos 5.20)â⬠The destruction of Israel is the outcome of all their sins.
Kennedy Controversy :: essays research papers
The Kennedy Controversy à à à à à November 22, 1963, is a day that will forever live in the minds of those who lived that day, and fascinate younger generations to follow. On this date in history one of Americaââ¬â¢s most prestigious, well-known and respected presidents was shot and killed by an assassinââ¬â¢s bullet. This single act sent shock waves that paralyzed the country and other nations. Eyes were turned to the United States as everyone held his or her collective breath wondering what was going to happen next. Ike Pappas, a reporter for WNEW in New York, remembers being sent on assignment to Dallas, Texas, to cover the assassination events as they unfolded. Pappas describes his trip: I ran downstairs, hailed a cab, gave the guy twenty dollars, and took then the most fantastic ride, one of the most fantastic taxi rides ever because if you will recall New York City was in a state of shock with the rest of the world, and the bridges were jammed. The telephonesââ¬âyou could not make a callââ¬âyou could not get out of the city, and I just kept giving this guy twenty dollar bills saying, ââ¬Å"Get there, man, anyway you can.â⬠We went over backyards, through laundry, piles of laundries, rushing out to the airport (119). The government even shutdown all transportation and even closed the Mexican Border (Pappas 120). John Fitzgerald Kennedy, to many, seemed invincible because of his youth and aura of self-confidence (Ward 15). However, even the president knew how vulnerable he was. The night before that infamous day Kennedy was quoted as saying, ââ¬Å"If anyone wants to shoot a president it is not a very difficult job. All one has to do is get on a high building and a telescope rifle and there is nothing anyone can doâ⬠(Restin 40). Americaââ¬â¢s fascination with John F. Kennedyââ¬â¢s sudden death has led to many theories as to who really killed John Kennedy. à à à à à Soon after the chaos from the assassination settled, the nation began to demand answers. On November 29, 1963, President Lyndon Johnson, who was sworn in an hour and a half after Kennedy was pronounced dead, formed a special committee led by Chief Justice Earl Warren to make a thorough investigation into the assassination and report itsââ¬â¢ findings. This report became known as the Warren Commission (ââ¬Å"The Assassinationââ¬âAs the Plot Unfoldsâ⬠71). The Commission defined the indisputable facts of the case.

Not only do companies spend a majority of their money on advertising, they also use their employees as portable posters. If employees are supposed to be ââ¬Å"walking billboards,â⬠then most people would agree that not everyone will be eligible for that particular position. Discrimination is defined as showing favor unjustly. What some corporations are doing today is clearly unjust. People cannot control their appearance completely. Therefore, I must agree with Steven Greenhouse, the author of ââ¬Å"Going for the Look, but Risking Discrimination. â⬠Mr. Greenhouse has clearly shown in his article that only hiring certain people that ââ¬Å"look great,â⬠is definitely discrimination and should not occur. That is why I disagree with Mr. Cohenââ¬â¢s analysis. It is a known fact that one cannot sell everything by appearance alone. Mr. Cohen is a senior industry analyst with the NPD Group, a market research firm. He said, ââ¬Å"Retailers defend the approach to hiring based on image as necessary and smart, and the industry experts see the point. I thought that people were supposed to be hired based on their ability. In fact, Stephen J. Roppolo, a New Orleans lawyer who represents many hotels and restaurants, said ââ¬Å"I tell employers that their main focus needs to be hiring somebody who can g et the job done. â⬠Hiring for looks must be fairly risky from a legal standpoint because even lawyers that represent the businesses are saying that they should hire based on merit so that they do not get into trouble with the law. I have seen some first hand examples of questionable hiring practices. Many of the restaurants near my home are excellent examples of hiring based on appearance. At the restaurants, I have noticed that the servers are usually Caucasian and that the bus-boys and chefs tend to be Mexican-Americans. I have also noticed that the Chinese restaurants in my area only have Asian-Americans as waiters and waitresses. I thought that America was on the way to becoming a place full of equal opportunity. Apparently, we are taking a step back, instead of moving forward. Is hiring based on how attractive people are illegal? No, there is not a specific law saying that businesses cannot. Just because it is not illegal does not mean that it should be done. I feel that Mr . Cohenââ¬â¢s analysis is not correct. If a company had an extremely innovative and sought after product due to its wide range of uses and quality, the company would not need to stoop to such discriminatory hiring practices. The product would simply sell itself. After all, every company would love to get by without spending one dime on advertising. Imagine a world where everyone was hired based on merit.Productivity would increase everywhere because people would be doing what they are best at instead of just standing around and ââ¬Å"looking great. â⬠Commentary This essay illustrates the EPT Scoring Guideââ¬â¢s criteria for a score of 6. The superior response indicates that the writer is very well-prepared to handle college-level reading and writing. â⬠¢ The writer understands and focuses clearly on the topic raised by the quotation in the thesis, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦ only hiring certain people that ââ¬Ëlook great,ââ¬â¢ is definitely discrimination and should not oc cur. â⬠â⬠¢ The summary of Cohenââ¬â¢s argument is clear and accurate, and the paraphrasing is effective. The writer analyzes the issue of hiring for looks thoughtfully and has developed an insightful response focused on the legal implications of the practice. â⬠¢ The essay is coherently organized and developed with a body paragraph of analysis and a paragraph citing the example of hiring on the basis of appearance in ethnic restaurants, which extends the response beyond that which is provided in the reading passage. The conclusion makes a strong case for hiring on the basis of merit. â⬠¢ The writer demonstrates a strong command of language and syntactic variety, alternating fluent, longer sentences with short sentences to make a point. The essay is virtually error-free and reflects the writerââ¬â¢s command of the conventions of incorporating the words and ideas of others into the writerââ¬â¢s response to an argument. Sample student essay with a score of 5: Discrimination Vs Wealth One of the biggest problems causing separation in todayââ¬â¢s society is discrimination based on looks. Our morality is constantly decreasing due to greed and selfishness. At one point in time we focused on the well being of every human being no matter their race, color or gender; looks meant nothing while love and friendships meant everything. On the contrary to Marshal Cohenââ¬â¢s statement that a ââ¬Å"brand enhancerâ⬠or a ââ¬Å"walking bill boardâ⬠is critical, hiring people based on looks is not morally correct, and morality should be held above money and reputation. Hiring by looks can cause numerous amounts of issues, both at the governmental level and the emotional level. As Olophius Perry stated in the article, Going for the Look but Risking Discrimination, ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢re hiring by looks, then you can run into problems of race discrimination, national origin discrimination, gender discrimination, age discrimination, and e ven disability discrimination. (Greenhouse 1). Our country specifically was founded on equality and equal opportunity for all. When businesses start hiring based on looks and/or gender, our countryââ¬â¢s morals begin to slip slowly through Uncle Samââ¬â¢s fingers. Discrimination of any sort may also cause a person great emotional damage. Perhaps a hard working, well-kept, person was turned away from a job because of his or her un-attractive face, that person could be so hurt that they commit suicide; while one person gets richer because of this life changing decision they made, another personââ¬â¢s sanity is lost. This type of discrimination is not worth the pain and suffering of one human being in return for fame and money. Young men and women are used as sex symbols in todayââ¬â¢s twisted society. Many companies will hire young attractive women based on their beauty with the intention of giving men something to look at as well as giving them an incentive to come into th eir store. As Marshal Cohen replied, ââ¬Å"A guy wants to go hang out in a store where he can see good looking galsâ⬠(Greenhouse 3) shows that companies hire these girls only to bring in more profits by using them as an object, rather than a person, that men can drool over. What kind of messages are we sending to our future generations? Is it that girls must learn that they will not receive respect and that they need to weigh 110 pounds with big lips in order to be successful in life? Pressures are enormously overwhelming on todayââ¬â¢s young adults to look ââ¬Å"perfectâ⬠in societyââ¬â¢s eyes. The pressures build up and eventually lead to up to unhealthy alternatives to being skinny, becoming ââ¬Å"builtâ⬠, or having the exact look being sought. While our society may look better if we allow companies to hire by looks, it is also increasingly becoming unhealthy. In conclusion, hiring based on looks solely to raise profits is ethically and morally wrong. This idea will eventually bring our morality to an end. Health rates will drop and human sanity will continue to be taken away. In order to save our society and its morals, we should ban discrimination, or as some would call it hiring based on looks. Commentary This essay illustrates the EPT Scoring Guideââ¬â¢s criteria for a score of 5. The clear competence of the essay indicates that this writer is quite ready to handle college-level reading and writing. The writer understands the topic and accurately summarizes Cohenââ¬â¢s position, using his phrases ââ¬Å"brand enhancerâ⬠and ââ¬Å"walking bill board. â⬠The essayââ¬â¢s thesis is clear, but the writer could have sharpened it by refraining from presenting it as a three-part divided thesis. â⬠¢ The essay reflects the writerââ¬â¢s understanding of some of the complexity of the issue. The analysis of the impact of the practice of ââ¬Å"hiring for the lookâ⬠on young adultsââ¬â¢ self-image is thoughtfu l and adds depth, but the assertion that it causes insanity and suicides is unsubstantiated. The essay is well-organized and coherent, with the writer focusing on the legal implications of hiring on the basis of looks in the first body paragraph and the individual implications in the second. Each paragraph is thoroughly developed, and the conclusion presents a strong recommendation. â⬠¢ The essay displays some syntactic variety and facility, with occasional lapses in word choice and sentence construction. â⬠¢ The essay has scattered errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics (e. g. , ââ¬Å"numerous amounts of issues,â⬠ââ¬Å"using them as an object, rather than a person, that men can drool overâ⬠). Sample student essay with a score of 4:Beauty = Money Marshall Cohenââ¬â¢s argument is basically that beautiful women sell, and I strongly agree. Itââ¬â¢s true that guys want to hang out in places where there are beautiful women. Itââ¬â¢s also true that these wom en represent an image and that if that image is pleasing to the eye then other women will want to emulate it. Being a guy, I know the power women have over us as a gender; especially the good looking ones. The fact is that businesses know this and exploit it. Last year alone I must have spent a good 300 dollars because a cute girl would ask me to donate to the charity, or that I looked good in a pair of pants she wanted me to buy. Also, itââ¬â¢s how most guys decide on things. Take for instance if there were two restaurants that served similar food. We would almost always end up going to the one with the good looking waitresses. Guys are suckers for cute girls and will spend great amounts of time and money just to the around them. However, men arenââ¬â¢t nearly as bad as women. When the average girl sees a super model or Britney Spears wearing Abercrombie and Fitch they think the key to being beautiful and popular is to match their wardrobes. They feel that if they dress like t heir idols theyââ¬â¢ll be more important in the public eye.I have a friend that buys every outfit she sees Mandy Moore wear on television. Itââ¬â¢s already cost her over a thousand dollars, but she doesnââ¬â¢t mind just as long as people make her feel important. In the end using beautiful people to advertise your product translates to one thing: money. The equation is simple, the better the girl looks the more money you make, and as long as the public sees beauty as only skin deep this will always be true. Commentary This essay illustrates the EPT Scoring Guideââ¬â¢s criteria for a score of 4.This adequate response to the topic suggests that the writer should be able to handle college-level reading and writing. â⬠¢ The writer demonstrates a generally accurate but somewhat simplistic understanding of the passage, summarizing it as ââ¬Å"beautiful women sell. â⬠The writer accepts this argument on the basis of his own experience and develops his response accordin gly. â⬠¢ The essay maintains a clear focus on the point. It is organized around the assertion that both men and women are attracted to businesses that ââ¬Å"hire for the look. â⬠However, it never acknowledges the legal or moral counter-arguments to this position. The personal examples support the writerââ¬â¢s position and are developed in some detail, but the essay would have been strengthened by more analysis of the issues. â⬠¢ The language is fluent and often colloquial (ââ¬Å"Guys are suckers for cute girlsâ⬠), in keeping with the writerââ¬â¢s personal approach to the topic. However, some sentences are not formed correctly (e. g. , ââ¬Å" . . . because a cute girl would ask me to donate to the charity, or that I looked goodâ⬠¦. â⬠; ââ¬Å"Take for instance if there were two restaurants that served similar food. â⬠) â⬠¢ The essay generally demonstrates control of grammar, usage, and mechanics.Sample student essay with a score of 3: Goi ng For the Look There are three types of people in the world when it comes to style. There are the fashionable, who care what they look like and what other people think. There are the unfashionable, who think they are fashionable but do not run with the trend. Then there are the people in between. They could care less what others think. To try to get people to buy their products, a producer will look at all three types of people and chose the one that best fits the product. So the Gap would choose someone who looks good in their product. There are certain clothes that fit certain bodies certain ways. People do not want to see a fat, ugly person in tight pants and a short shirt. A place like Hot Topic wants to draw in a punk rocker crowed so they will hire people that look as if they are punk rockers. These people will have many piercings and tattoos that are visible to the public. Only certain people do not think that that stuff is not attractive and Hot Topic wants to bring them int o the store. Thrift stores and hand me down stores would hire the last type of person. People who shop at those stores do not care what they look like or cannot afford to shop anywhere else. These people cannot choose what the person selling their clothes looks like. In conclusion, there are three types of people in the fashion industry. Some are shoe-ins for certain jobs just from what they look like. Others cannot get those jobs if they tried. Cohenââ¬â¢s statement is correct. Now a day people hire for looks not skill. Commentary This essay illustrates the EPT Scoring Guideââ¬â¢s criteria for a score of 3. Although the essay suggests a developing competence, it is flawed in significant ways that suggest the writerââ¬â¢s need for additional practice before being ready to succeed in college-level reading and writing. The writer does not explain Cohenââ¬â¢s argument, instead writing an essay about style. â⬠¢ The thesis, ââ¬Å"There are three types of people in the wor ld when it comes to style,â⬠does not focus on the issue of ââ¬Å"hiring for the look. â⬠The writer addresses the issue in the body of the essay by saying that Gap and Hot Topic hire people who look good in the companyââ¬â¢s clothes, while thrift stores have no choice in who they hire; however, the writer directly addresses Cohenââ¬â¢s argument only in the final sentences. â⬠¢ The body paragraphs are series of assertions that lack effective transitions. Most of the sentences lack variety (e. g. , the series of ââ¬Å"There are . . . â⬠sentences in the introduction), and word choice is imprecise (ââ¬Å"that stuffâ⬠). â⬠¢ The essay has an accumulation of errors, especially in spelling and punctuation. Sample student essay with a score of 2: Going for the Look Cohenââ¬â¢s argument expresses his oppions and his only the may not matter in the sites of other people. I donââ¬â¢t agree or disagree with his argument. I hold this position because of three reasons, for starters is the retailers choice who he or she wants to hire not his.And for there businesses to expand and to grow then they must hire whoever appeals to the consumer. Last his argument may or may not be true and tell complete truth, so Iââ¬â¢m not going to base my facts or opions on him because sometimes you should keep them to your self. As I Said before it is the retailers choice who they want to hire and if you must ensist on talking bad about these people then you must have problems with yourself maybe your jellous, just because your not in the positon to hire whoever you want doesnââ¬â¢t mean the people that do make those choices wheather they are right or wrong. The retailers must hire the right personel to appeal to the consumer if that means only hireing whites, just blacks or purple, green, yellow it does not matter because that is what they have to do to sell there product. My third and final reason is that I donââ¬â¢t really want to agree or disagree baed on the facts that he is giving me are more better things to worry about then I some stores have racial issues that is there business not yours. To conclude Cohen argument expresses his own oppions that might be better kept to himself. Commentary This essay illustrates the EPT Scoring Guideââ¬â¢s criteria for a score of 2.The serious flaws here indicate that this writer will need considerable additional practice before being ready to succeed in college-level reading and writing. â⬠¢ The writer demonstrates a basic understanding of the passage but is unable to respond meaningfully to the topic, instead resorting to a personal attack on Cohen. â⬠¢ The writer fails to respond to Cohenââ¬â¢s argument with a focused thesis. The sentence ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t agree or disagree with this argumentâ⬠suggests a failure to understand the need to take a position and provide evidence to support it. â⬠¢ Although the writer attempts three body paragraphs, they are severely underdeveloped. The writer lacks basic control of syntax and vocabulary. â⬠¢ The writer has serious and persistent errors in grammar, usage, and mechanics that severely interfere with meaning. In particular, the sentence boundary errors and serious spelling errors obscure the meaning. Sample student essay with a score of 1: Their many methods of hiring people. Many markets know hire just because of the image of a person. In my opinion I agree and disagree to a certain point. Their could be certain stores that have people who have expirence, no experience, and just for the look. When you have a pearson who has experience you could expeted from them to accomplished their job. They would always be on time or even earlier. You would not hear bad comments about that person Their very reasponsible and would not complain about geting their job done Commentary This essay illustrates the EPT Scoring Guideââ¬â¢s criteria for a score of 1. The fundamental deficiencies of thi s essay clearly indicate that the writer needs much additional practice to be ready to succeed at college-level reading and writing. â⬠¢ The writer indicates only a slight understanding of the passage and fails to refer to Cohenââ¬â¢s argument. The essay seems to be about qualifications for jobs, with one qualification being ââ¬Å"the look. â⬠However, the relationship of the thesis to the topic is not clear. The sentence, ââ¬Å"In my opinion I agree and disagree to a certain pointâ⬠suggests a serious lack of focus. â⬠¢ The essay appears to be incomplete, with the second and third body paragraphs and the conclusion implied by the thesis but unwritten. â⬠¢ The writer lacks basic control of syntax and vocabulary. â⬠¢ The writer has serious and persistent errors in mechanics that severely interfere with meaning. Spelling and verb form errors are pervasive.

City Life vs Country Life Essay
The difference between city life and country life is that if you live in the city, you have barely any privacy but, in the country life there can be woods all around your house and no one can see you. In the city there are lots of apartments not really houses and in the country you have your own houses that are bigger and the more people can come over. Lastly in the city you canââ¬â¢t hunt, you canââ¬â¢t grow your own garden, and you canââ¬â¢t walk your dogs were would they do their business, but in the country you can have your own farm, you just let your dogââ¬â¢s run free, you can have your own garden and you can shoot your gun if you have one. I think you country life is better for you. see more:city life vs country life When you think about living in the city youââ¬â¢re excited at first and say letââ¬â¢s throw a party. Well everything going as plan. Then the lady/man comes home to the apartment next door they hear the party going on and they canââ¬â¢t sleep because itââ¬â¢s too loud so they come to your door and ask if we can keep it down. We are respectful and say yes we can. Well as we are trying to keep it down things get out of hand and the man/ lady next door calls the cops. The end parties over, but if we were out in the country it would be no problem throwing a party cause we live out in the middle of nowhere. We can also have a bonfire for our party because there is room unlike the city. If you were to build a fire in the city people would probably call it a riot. When you have a family get together out in the country you can have as many people as you want because we can have the get together outside and inside. Cause on thanksgiving and Christmas my family goes outside and plays football. You try doing that out in the city and youââ¬â¢re probably going to get hit by a car. Also if youââ¬â¢re in an apartment in the city you can only invite 10 to 15 people over at the maximum or it will be really crowed. What if youââ¬â¢re having people come over for the super bowl where is everyone going to sit youââ¬â¢ll have some people on the floor, some people on the couch, andà some people sitting on the table. Where would all the food go if you have people sitting on the table? It would probably end up in everyoneââ¬â¢s lap then if you jump up cause of a touch down then the foods most likely going on someoneââ¬â¢s head. When living in the city you canââ¬â¢t walk your dogs, you canââ¬â¢t hunt, and you canââ¬â¢t grow your own garden. Well you can walk your dogs but they have to be on leashes and you would have to pick up their business wherever they go and they canââ¬â¢t run free. Also where would you plant a garden if you wanted one I donââ¬â¢t think you can? How in the world would you hunt for deer, turkey, rabbit, squirrel, bird or anything else in the city? Thereââ¬â¢s no way the animals would even go to the city anyway. Plus if you shot a gun while you were in the city you would most likely go to jail because somebody might think youââ¬â¢re shooting at them. Why would you even shoot a gun in the city? When you out in the country you can let your dog roam free, shoot your gun whenever you would like and garden whenever the weather would be okay to garden. Have a great time with family, pets, and friends whenever you would like and have no issues along the way. In my option I think it is way better to live in the country then in the city. I do live in the country and have lived in the city. I love it so much better in the country because itââ¬â¢s so peaceful and quite. We have a family get together all the time and have never had an issue. When I lived in the city people where always telling us to be quite because our music was too loud so I love it in the country. Like I said itââ¬â¢s up to you to make your own option about this. Well this is why I picked living in the country rather than living in the city.
